Getting into the whole competitive fly-fishing gig this year was a challenge…I had to learn entirely new techniques to keep my game. Of course, Czech nymphing was introduced to me and I now have a new favorite way to fish smaller streams and pocket water.

The Czech style of nymphing is completely different than most traditional nymphing methods used. No additional weight is used. Instead, the flies are heavily weighted themselves and therefor eliminate the need for split shot. Czech is considered a variation of short line and high stick methods combined.

Instead of indicators, a colorful “sighter” is used. The sighted contrasts with the color of the backdrop and detects even the slightest tug at the fly.

The equipment used for Czech Nymphing is very similar to what most guys use for nymphing anyways but pros prefer longer rods for more reach on bigger waters. This allows them to cover more water without getting too wet…

I highly encourage you to get out and make a few drifts with some Czech style flies. I can guarantee an improved catch rate…
