Many flyfishermen believe that you have to take a great journey to catch decent sized fish. Yes I would take a Pyramid Lake Lahontan Cutthroat over an average sized Rainbow anyday but most of the time we are within a shirt driving distance of World Class fisheries that we just haven’t discovered yet. Being a native of Denver my entire life has really opened my eyes to some of the less explored trophy waters available to me. Take the South Platte for example. Anglers wait all year long for the big fish to start their annual spawning runs from the big Reservoirs like Spinney and Elevenmile up into the Dream Stream sections. They do have a chance at some pretty sizeable fish but is it really worth standing shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of drunken spinfishermen when you can hit some of the lower sections and still catch very nice fish. A few buddies of mine caught some monsters this season just by trying different places. (Im not going to give away these spots for the sake of my own life but you get the picture) So Im motivating you to get out and explore those spots that you oogle at everyday on your way to work. Who knows? Maybe youll catch a 27inch Buck within 5 miles from your doorstep…
