The Front Range has many great trout fisheries flowing from the arms of the Rockies. These trout streams such as Clear Creek,Boulder Creek, and last but not least Bear Creek are often passed on by anglers due to the lack of quality of fish. I’m here to tell you that these are some of the most fun streams to fish because not only are they very close to home, they are loaded with wild trout that are just waiting to take a fly.

Bear Creek has an awesome reputation for being a great place for beginners to test their luck on some generally foolish wild browns that take anything you throw at them. While on some days this is true, I can also write about the days that this stream can become very technical when the fish are keyed in on a specific bug in a specific stage of their lives.

About a month or so ago, I went up to Lair Of The Bear and we literally threw every fly I had in my arsenal to only land one fish with maybe two or three other hook-ups. Then two weeks ago, my friend,Andrew, and I took a short trip to Morrison and hung around for two hours. We decided to work on some Czech Nymphing and had some surprising results. Within that two hour time slot, we landed 40+ fish (with 6 doubles) that were a small to decent sized. All but one of these fish were browns except one Rainbow that I personally hooked.

Overall, I rate this stream a 9 out of 10 as far as a great fishery goes. It has quickly become one of my favorite spots near home to go and practice a few flies and/or techniques…
